Installing A Parts Washer: Utilities, IP54 Cabinets And Floor Loads

Time : 2026-10-29

Conspectus

A cleaning machine is ordered based on its process performance and installed based on its service requirements. The gap between those two discussions is where most commissioning delays originate: the machine arrives, but the floor is not ready, the air is humid, the drain is undersized, or the electrical supply delivers the correct voltage but at an incorrect rating.

None of these issues constitutes a design fault. They are typical consequences of a project in which equipment specifications were written by a process engineer while site preparation was managed by a facilities team that never reviewed those specifications.

This article outlines what a washer of this class actually requires from the building—using terminology familiar to the building team—so that both discussions can occur concurrently. Big Bird Industrial (formerly Shimada Big Bird Industrial) has been designing and building cleaning and deburring systems for automotive powertrain components since 2001, and the requirements listed below reflect those commonly stipulated in production contracts.

1. Power and Protection

A washer is a wet environment with a large electrical load, and the two facts together determine the protection concept.

Cabinet And Field Ratings Are Different

The main cabinet normally carries a rating around IP54, which protects against dust and splashing water and is adequate for a cabinet mounted away from direct spray. Field devices sit much closer to the wet: sensors, switches and valve islands near the chamber are usually specified at IP67 because they see washdown and condensation directly. A machine built entirely to IP54 fails at the field devices, and a machine built entirely to IP67 is expensive for no benefit.

Loads That Are Not Constant

The supply must cover the simultaneous load of pump, heater, dryer blower, and ventilation, and must tolerate the inrush current when a large motor starts. Variable frequency drives are commonly used on the pump both for this reason and because they allow the pump to match demand instead of running at rated power throughout the cycle. Where such a drive is installed, the supply must be specified with harmonic distortion in mind, because a large drive on a weak supply can disturb other equipment on the same distribution board.

2. Water

Water is the medium, and its quality and disposal must both be arranged before the machine is filled.

Fill Quality and Top-Up

The fill connection normally carries a meter so that consumption can be tracked and so that a leak becomes visible as an abnormal reading rather than as a wet floor. Hard water leaves scale on heat exchangers and on the parts themselves; therefore, where the local supply is hard, the specification must name a water softener rather than leave it to be discovered after the first month.

Sekva Aero Estas Procesa Postulo

Konsumo Estas Pinta, Ne Meznombra

Blow-off stages consume air in bursts, and the supply has to hold pressure through the burst. Sizing on average consumption produces a machine whose blow-off is weak at the moment it matters, which shows up as a dryness failure rather than as a pressure alarm.

4. Extraction And Ventilation

Mist and vapour have to leave the building, and the route is usually decided by whoever owns the roof rather than by whoever owns the process.

Mist Collection At The Machine

A collector mounted on the machine captures mist at source and returns the liquid to the tank. That is cheaper than extracting the whole hall, and it keeps the oil out of ductwork that nobody will clean. The collector needs a service interval of its own, and the schedule should be written before the machine is commissioned rather than after the first complaint from the neighbouring line.

Heat and humidity

A heated machine releases both heat and water vapour into the room. In a small bay, that raises the humidity enough to condense on cooler surfaces nearby — a building problem that manifests as a process problem. Extraction at the door opening addresses it more effectively than extraction at the roof.

5. Floor, Space, and Access

The physical installation is usually the last thing discussed and the first thing to cause a delay.

Floor Loading and Level

A machine handling parts of several hundred kilograms, or a large unit handling parts of several tonnes, imposes a floor load that includes the machine, the water, and the part. That figure must be checked against the slab rather than assumed. A level floor matters just as much: a tank that is not level holds water at one end and drains poorly at the other.

Service Access

Filters, pumps, nozzles, and the collector must all be accessible without dismantling the machine or obstructing a walkway. The space left around the machine at installation is the maintenance space available for the next ten years, and it is worth negotiating before the layout is finalized.

The dimension most often reduced first is the clearance above the tank. Accessing a nozzle manifold or lifting a pump usually requires both vertical and floor space; a machine installed under a low ceiling or beneath a duct run cannot be serviced without removing other components. Verifying overhead clearance against the largest component that must be lifted out takes five minutes during planning—but may require crane rental during production.

Servitium Apa yang harus dikonfirmasi Typical failure if overlooked
Electricum Simultaneous load, inrush current, drive harmonics Nuisance tripping at startup
Water fill Flow rate, water hardness, meter installed Scale buildup on the heat exchanger
Defluxus Dump rate, not average flow Overflow during tank replacement
Air comprimé Dryer on the machine supply, peak draw Dryness criterion not met
Extractio Collector capacity, duct route, service access Oil mist settling on nearby lines
Forum Loaded mass, level, anchor points Poor drainage, cracked slab

6. The Sequence That Avoids Delay

The practical order is to fix the machine envelope, then map every service to a connection point, then confirm each connection exists with the right capacity, then schedule delivery. The step that is usually skipped is the third, on the assumption that a building with power and water can support a washer.

A signed services schedule, attached to the equipment order and reviewed by both the process and facilities teams, prevents almost all of the commissioning surprises described above. It costs a meeting and saves a fortnight.

Siccatorem in machina montatum removet dependentiam a modo quo cetera fabbrica aerem principalem utitur.

Quantum Spatii Solumnis Circum Eam Relinquendum Est?

Satis ut omnes tabellas servitii aperire possis, omnia elementa filtrorum removere, et ad omnes pompas pervenire sine ullo repositione. Imago fabricantis est machina; imago operativa maior est.

Potestne Machina Cum Aliis Instrumentis Eundem Foveam Communem Habere?

Only if the drain can handle the dump rate and if backflow from other equipment cannot reach the tank. A shared drain that backs up during a dump contaminates the bath with whatever it carries.

Is a Water Softener Always Necessary?

Only on hard supplies, but the decision should be made from a water analysis rather than from experience elsewhere. Scale on a heat exchanger reduces heating capacity progressively and is expensive to remove.

Conclusio

A washer is installed on services that are decided long before the machine is designed. Power with the right protection split, water with the right quality and a drain sized for a dump, dry air at peak draw, extraction that captures mist at source, and a floor that carries the loaded mass.

Each of those is cheap to provide during site preparation and expensive to correct afterwards. A services schedule agreed at the order stage is the single document that prevents most commissioning delays.
